Dengue fever is a viral infection that is transmitted via mosquitoes in South and Southeast Asia, Latin America, several regions throughout Africa, and Oceania. In most people the infection is not severe and disappears within a week without generating any lasting issues. However, in uncommon cases, the disease can be really serious and life-threatening.
Dengue fever is a disease caused by a virus transmitted by a mosquito. There are four viruses connected closely to the disease. The viruses are connected to the same viruses that cause yellow fever and the West Nile infection. The specific type of mosquito is named Aedes, which is also active during the day. The is disease can be debilitating and painful. There is no particular treatment or vaccine widely available for dengue. Therefore, it is important to avoid mosquito bites when visiting a region where the disease can be found.
The symptoms of a primary infection with Dengue fever are similar to those of the flu. A secondary infection will show symptoms 5-8 days after the mosquito bite. Symptoms of a secondary infection include fever, headache (especially behind the eyes), and joint and muscle pain, followed by a rash with swollen dots (similar to stinging nettle) spreads from the torso to the face and extremities. Sometimes bleeding beneath the skin appears in a pinpoint pattern.
Dengue fever generally heals after ten days without symptoms. Very seldom will a bad case run its course without a skin rash, but still with hemorrhagic diathesis (tendency to bleed), hepatomegaly (swelling of the liver), and symptoms of shock (Dengue shock syndrome). In these cases, symptoms can be treated with blood and blood-product infusions.
